Project Linus Blanket Buzz
Jan 31, 2005

Linda Zisko, Activity Director in a senior assisted living facility in Sacramento, California, reports that working with a senior population can be challenging. Many residents have low feelings of self-worth, and feel they have nothing to give. Finding fresh program ideas that hold interest is not an easy task.

After watching a segment about Project Linus on the Oprah television show, Linda and a handful of residents started a blanket-making program. Although it was slow going at first, the group kept at it until they had a stack of blankets to donate.

Claire Thompson from the Sacramento chapter of Project Linus picked up those first few blankets, and brought along boxes of yarn for the project to continue. “You’d think it was Christmas when Claire brings her bags of yarn,” Linda smiles, “I’ve had to limit these ladies to one project at a time!”

The group is growing as more residents become interested in Project Linus. The seniors knit, crochet, wind yarn or just socialize when they gather to work, and the dining room buzzes when it’s time for “show and tell.”

Linda and some of the residents visited Shriner’s Hospital where their donations are delivered and witnessed “blanket love” in person. They left with renewed enthusiasm to make even more blankets.

One resident told Linda that she loved to crochet, but she and her family had all the crocheted blankets that they would ever need or want. Making blankets for Project Linus allows her to do what she loves, and know that it’s not just busy work. There is a purpose and a need--a warm hug for a child.
