Project Linus Blanket Buzz
Oct 24, 2011

At McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois, service is an important part of students' education. The "University 101" course helps to ease first-year students' transition to campus life while focusing on personal and social responsibility. One UNI-101 class of 16, led by Dr. Neil Quisenberry, associate professor of sociology, chose as its service project making fleece blankets for Project Linus to give to St. Louis area children in need of a little warmth and comfort.

Megan Just, who has made blankets before for babies and soldiers in Iraq, suggested Project Linus. "It's a good group bonding experience, helping others in need," she said. Students chose a no-sew pattern from the Project Linus website and five colorful fabrics covered with dogs, "Toy Story" characters, sports themes and peace signs.

"We wanted a fun and easy project to help out children," said peer mentor Caitlyn Westfall. "I was proud to see my students working together for something really great and having fun."

"It made me feel good, helping babies who don't already have blankets," added Anthony Venditto.
