Project Linus Blanket Buzz
Jan 31, 2005

Judy Walter, coordinator of the Carroll County, Maryland, chapter of Project Linus, shares the following report from the MOMS Club of Hampstead, MD:

In April of this year, I was reading the Carroll County Times and saw an article about teenagers at North Carroll High School making blankets for children at our local hospital. I was inspired and thought this would be a great project for our MOMS Club. I telephoned MaryJo Craft and we discussed several different ways our club could become involved. She also invited me to a meeting at the school for Project Linus.

The meeting wasn’t for a few weeks, so I began talking to several of our members. Most of them wanted to know more information, a few told me that they had never sewn on a button before, and some wanted to know how many blankets I wanted them to make. During the month of May, I was able to attend two meetings at the school. While I was there, they put me right to work. I pinned fabric and batting together, and then handed to someone else who sewed it together. I was very impressed by the young ladies that I saw giving up their afternoon to help someone else. I asked Judy Walter, the coordinator of the Carroll County Chapter of Project Linus, if I could take a few blankets home to sew and show them to the MOMS Club. The answer, of course, was Yes!

At our next meeting, I shared some of the quick quilts with the group. "Is that all we have to do?" was the response that I got from most members.

The MOMS Club is a support group for the stay-at-home mom who is interested in the world around her and wants a variety of activities for herself and her children. The MOMS Club has hundreds of chapters across the country and over 30,000 members. The MOMS Club is the only national support group specifically for at-home mothers.

The MOMS Club of Hampstead was started in June of 2000 and is sponsored by the Wesley UMC. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at 10:00 a.m. at Wesley UMC. In addition to monthly meetings, there are also outings or other get togethers on different weekdays to accommodate mothers with busy schedules.

Members of the MOMS Club believe being a mother shouldn’t isolate you. Children are welcome to all club activities.

Each year, a service project is selected for the group. This year, The MOMS Club of Hampstead participated in Project Linus to provide handmade blankets for children at local hospitals and children in need. MOMS Club members feel it is important to help all children in their community.
