Project Linus Blanket Buzz
Aug 22, 2005

Carol Babbitt, president of Project Linus, was honored to receive the “25 Women in Leadership Award” from The Marketeer magazine and WEEK 25 TV. Following is an excerpt from an article appearing in The Marketeer.

Carol Babbitt was moving her family from Minneapolis to Bloomington two years ago when she got a phone call that changed her life. She was asked to take over the presidency of a volunteer organization, called Project Linus, in which she had been involved. Project Linus collects handmade blankets from volunteers and distributes them to children at local hospitals and homeless shelters. Since the organization was founded in 1995, it has donated more than a half-million blankets.

As president, Carol spends more than 60 nonpaid hours a week at her home in Bloomington, coordinating the 300 nationwide chapters and more than 25,000 volunteers. She says her husband and sons have been very supportive of her decision to dedicate so many hours and so much energy to her passion. Her boys, 13-year-old Tommy and 10-year-old Jacob, have frequently helped deliver blankets to children.

“I’m the kind of person who needs a service outlet,” explains Carol. “Project Linus is a perfect fit for me because I love to sew and quilt...and the comfort these blankets give the kids is just priceless.”

Carol, On the Spot

What person had the greatest impact on your life?
My mother. She taught me everything I needed to know to be happy.

What motivates you?
The children. I got a letter from a little girl who received a blanket who said, “You could’ve been doing something else, but you did this.” We are warming these children inside when they really need to know someone cares.
